This is so not me...I usually do my civic duty and go vote for every election but this year I was really annoyed. Yesterday for instance, there were 23 calls on the caller ID. 20 of those calls were from people trying to convince me to vote for Doug Hoffman or Bill Owens.
As I walked in the door on Monday at 3:58..I hear the phone ringing...so I drop my 20 bags and run to the phone..thinking it was Eric...and I hear a George Pataki pre-recorded message. I of course hung up...not 2 minutes later..I hadn't even had time to take my coat off or my kids coats off...the phone rings again. Another political phone call. I then hung up from Joe Biden (again pre-recorded) and headed to the mailbox and I had 4 mailers from political leaders. I add this to the pile we already had going to bring our total to 27 mailers in the past 2 weeks. Then I turn to go unpack Brady's diaper bag and the phone rings again. The time this time is 4:08. In a matter of 10 minutes my phone had rang 3 times. I literally hang up from this person and the phone rings again...this time it was a legitimate person..it was Eric. I was really annoyed by all of these phone calls.
Tonight...more phone calls the last one just 5 minutes ago and the best part. I young girl comes to my door at 6:30 as I was walking out the door to go vote and she asks me if I had voted yet and when I told her that's where I was going at that exact moment..she asks me who I was voting for. I personally was offended by this but asked her who she voted for and she told me.. and then I told her I was undecided until I got there and she went on and on about being a registered democrat and that I should vote for the Democratic candidate. I then asked her to leave as she was blocking in both of my cars in the driveway.
My point of this blog is this...I feel that politics is very important and that we have a civic duty to vote for the people we want to represent us in out government but isn't there more important things they could do with the money they have spent on tv ads and commericals bashing their opponent, the money they spend on printing and then mailing the mailers they send out. I am an educator so naturally my brain thinks about education...but just think...the money that they have spent on the campaign could give a school the funds that they need to help EDUCATE students. Think about all of the meals that they could give to homeless and hungry people. Think about the money they could donate to help find a cure for cancer. Think about the money that they could give to charities. My question is this....why are their priority winning and not helping. I would be more apt to vote for a person that donated his campaign money to a local school district or food pantry before I voted for someone that used their money to publicly humiliate their opponent.
That being said..I VOTED and am PROUD I did!!!
